OPD · Open Product Description
How a product is made, written down.
Open Product is an open library of how real products and their factories are built. Each release is an OPD: the parts, the BOM, the assembly, the full line, and what goes wrong. Every value says where it came from.

What's in an OPD
OPD does for a physical product what OpenUSD does for a 3D scene. It's one structured description anyone can take to recreate the product, simulate it, fork it, stand up a line for it, or learn from it.
Think of it as open weights for hardware. Open weights give you the finished model without its training data. An OPD gives you the product and its factory, without the maker's private data.
| Layer | What it holds | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Card | The build card on top: what it is, how it was made, how far to trust it | Summary |
| Parts | CAD, measured tolerance spread, materials, processes, stack-ups | Measured |
| Electronics | Boards and components. No firmware, ever | Observed |
| BOM | Bill of materials, likely vendors, should-cost | Inferred |
| Assembly | Process and sequence, step by step | Inferred |
| Line | The full FATP line: IQC sampling, stations, SOPs, test plan, packaging, control plan | Inferred |
| Risk | PFMEA tied to field evidence | Observed |
| Simulation | An OpenUSD scene and the inputs to run it | Model |
| Lessons | What we'd change, and issues with how they were resolved | Shared |
02 · The record
Every value is a claim
Nothing in an OPD is stated without a source. Each value carries where it came from and how confident we are, so you can see what was measured and what was worked out. When we infer, we mark it, and we ask the people who know to correct us.
Where a value comes from
Each OPD is private, embargoed to a date, or public.

03 · The frame
Every factory has three versions
The product and its line, rebuilt from the box. Retail units, CT scans, teardowns and public filings.
The line you actually run. It belongs to you, and we never build it.
The line you'll run next, tested in simulation before it exists.

OPD-0001: the Joy-Con
Our first release is a product many people have held. We're building it from retail units and public sources only. Before any release goes public, the maker gets a private preview.
